All of us at The
Commonwealth Cafe want to thank all of you for coming August 24, 2007 Ahem. Burrito heaven is a place made of many piles of little beans and cheeses that met their demise down here in the late-night hours. One of those piles is personally yours, and you really don't want to see how many of these concoctions you've injected into your stomach for lack of better available nutrition when you're single filing out of the bars. Not that we don't love 'em. But, for crying out loud, San Diego has around 3 million people, and there is a niche, no an outright demand, for a decent square meal at an indecent hour just waiting to be filled. Commonwealth Cafe, a not-quite-open diner next to Bluefoot Bar on 30th Street, recognized this simple wish and planned on slinging some quality, inexpensive food from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. to the hopeful people of America's Finest. Obviously, that was, like, too good to be true, and the City of San Diego did its part to say so after the very same city and Health Department approved the original hours. Some divine document from the invisible, powerful people above has forced the diner to change its hours to noon to midnight. Great. We don't even get our heels on till about 11 p.m. So why is it so abso-impossible to keep a business open past a sixth-grader's curfew? Let's take a little jump beyond the jump for a short, sweet lesson in acronyms and all the incomprehensible letters of the law. Also, we'll tell you where you can sign the official petition against ridiculousness. You can't change the world, but maybe you can help out a neighborhood. LESSON!: 1.) CN-1-2 The above letter/number combo is Commonwealth's Great Enemy because it refers to a "commercial node zoning area," meaning it is prohibited to do business in this particular node after midnight. 2.) Whoops But CN-1-2 was a mysteriously silent force until some Concerned Neighbor complained about the diner's proposed hours long after hours were approved by important, invisible powers that be and also after tons of money, time, sweat and excitement had been poured into the business plan. 3.) And Furthermore, Saguero's across the street is open 24 hours, and Jack in the Box and Bluefoot Bar next door are open until 2 a.m., the latter two being bordered by two sides of residences, while Commonwealth is bordered by commercial space on all four sides. And they're not serving alcohol or trying to play loud punk rock or encourage Communism, so what's the deal? 4.) So You can donate your John Hancock to a petition against all this nonsense that can be found at Commonwealth Cafe, Bluefoot Bar, Luigi's Pizzeria on 25th, Blissful Bean on 30th, Santos on Thorn, Rebecca's on Juniper and Gorgeous Salon.
Reviews from Yelp.com The menu is basic with their extra little somethings thrown in there (mac and cheese, chili fries, "texas football", etc.). I think it works well that way because you get exactly what you expect. The food is good, and it's what you plan on it being. They're open from 12pm to 12midnight, but they're trying to get the zoning changed to stay open later (have been trying for a while) - so sign the petition while you're in there! The decor evokes visions of fifties diner meets nineties internet cafe. I don't know if I should eat or watch porn, but I dig it, and the countertop has pennies inside it and looks really cool. They have veggie burgers and veggie dogs and vegan chili and at the same time, they have lots of things that are a heart attack in a bowl (or on a plate) so they've got something for all my many eating moods. It's nice and simple and open late, so it will be really great to have some tasty options other than the taco shop after ten at night. I have a feeling this place will do really well since it's right next to Bluefoot and runs about the same hours during the week. If you stop drinking soon enough, you can grab a bite while they're still open. George C. The service was OK, they still seem very new to everything. The place is set up like a 1950 restaurant but its cool. The front counter is all pennies and a glass cover on top, really cool. They have several tables but sit 2 people. That I saw was one booth that could hold 5 people I think and then the outside table could hold about 6 people. Brad L. Tyler H.
August 21, 2007 Opening Update The electrical upgrade for the building is nearly complete and hopefully will be done by the end of this week. Once that's finished we can get the final building inspection and then call for our final health inspection. After we're signed off by the Health Department we'll take 2 or 3 days to cook our menu and set our service standards. I would love to think that we could be open by the Labor Day weekend. Some things take time and can't be rushed. Suffice it to say that we will be open as fast as humanly possible. August 21, 2007 We are in the process of submitting the application to obtain the Neighborhood Use Permit needed for us to be open late. There is a mountain of information that has to be gathered in addition to a $2000.00 fee required when we submit our application We are steadily gathering the needed information while trying to get the restaurant open as quickly as possible. There are signatures petitions at the following locations if you would like to show your support for us. Commonewealth
Cafe You can also leave a comment here on our website. We will keep you up to date on the latest. July 26, 2007 Thanks for waiting for us....we'll see you soon. July 27, 2007 About two weeks ago we received a letter from neighborhood code compliance office of the city of San Diego informing us that a complaint had been filed regarding our hours of operation. We learned our location falls in a CN-1-2 commercial node zoning area. This zoning designation prohibits doing business after midnight. The concept and business model for The Commonwealth Cafe has always been that of a late night diner. Our plans were approved by the city of San Diego and the Health Department and our hours of operation were never questioned. We simply seek to provide a service to our community and the neighborhood. A few facts to consider about the issue.
Sagauro's open 24 hours Both are bordered on two sides of the residences.
