THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO WANTS YOU TO STARVE AFTER 2 A.M.inside-sign

Ahem. Burrito heaven is a place made of many piles of little beans and cheeses that met their demise down here in the late-night hours. One of those piles is personally yours, and you really don't want to see how many of these concoctions you've injected into your stomach for lack of better available nutrition when you're single filing out of the bars. Not that we don't love 'em.

But, for crying out loud, San Diego has around 3 million people, and there is a niche, no an outright demand, for a decent square meal at an indecent hour just waiting to be filled. Commonwealth Cafe, a not-quite-open diner next to Bluefoot Bar on 30th Street, recognized this simple wish and planned on slinging some quality, inexpensive food from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. to the hopeful people of America's Finest.

Obviously, that was, like, too good to be true, and the City of San Diego did its part to say so after the very same city and Health Department approved the original hours. Some divine document from the invisible, powerful people above has forced the diner to change its hours to noon to midnight. Great. We don't even get our heels on till about 11 p.m.

So why is it so abso-impossible to keep a business open past a sixth-grader's curfew? Let's take a little jump beyond the jump for a short, sweet lesson in acronyms and all the incomprehensible letters of the law. Also, we'll tell you where you can sign the official petition against ridiculousness. You can't change the world, but maybe you can help out a neighborhood.

LESSON!:

1.) CN-1-2

The above letter/number combo is Commonwealth's Great Enemy because it refers to a "commercial node zoning area," meaning it is prohibited to do business in this particular node after midnight.

2.) Whoops

But CN-1-2 was a mysteriously silent force until some Concerned Neighbor complained about the diner's proposed hours long after hours were approved by important, invisible powers that be and also after tons of money, time, sweat and excitement had been poured into the business plan.

3.) And

Furthermore, Saguero's across the street is open 24 hours, and Jack in the Box and Bluefoot Bar next door are open until 2 a.m., the latter two being bordered by two sides of residences, while Commonwealth is bordered by commercial space on all four sides. And they're not serving alcohol or trying to play loud punk rock or encourage Communism, so what's the deal?

4.) So

You can donate your John Hancock to a petition against all this nonsense that can be found at Commonwealth Cafe, Bluefoot Bar, Luigi's Pizzeria on 25th, Blissful Bean on 30th, Santos on Thorn, Rebecca's on Juniper and Gorgeous Salon.

Finally, this place opened! It was worth the wait. George and I gave them a whirl for lunch today. We both got veggie burgers and fries. The veggie burger was very "normal", but I liked it for that. The girl working there told me they are working on making it more exciting, but I don't think there was anything wrong with it the way it is. If they change it, I'm sure it'll be for the better, but I think it was just the right size to not feel like a manatee after eating it and it had enough flavor to keep me coming back. I'm not a vegetarian, but I've been eating a lot of veggie meals lately, and this one suited me just fine. The fries are these long curlyish things that were fun and really good. There were tons of employees there trying to get things all figured out since they just opened at the beginning of this week, but they were all super nice and helpful and patient (they sat there and talked to me while I stared at the menu for ten minutes even though it's basically just three main items to choose from lol).

The menu is basic with their extra little somethings thrown in there (mac and cheese, chili fries, "texas football", etc.). I think it works well that way because you get exactly what you expect. The food is good, and it's what you plan on it being. They're open from 12pm to 12midnight, but they're trying to get the zoning changed to stay open later (have been trying for a while) - so sign the petition while you're in there! The decor evokes visions of fifties diner meets nineties internet cafe. I don't know if I should eat or watch porn, but I dig it, and the countertop has pennies inside it and looks really cool. They have veggie burgers and veggie dogs and vegan chili and at the same time, they have lots of things that are a heart attack in a bowl (or on a plate) so they've got something for all my many eating moods. It's nice and simple and open late, so it will be really great to have some tasty options other than the taco shop after ten at night. I have a feeling this place will do really well since it's right next to Bluefoot and runs about the same hours during the week. If you stop drinking soon enough, you can grab a bite while they're still open.

This is another place that's walking distance from my house. My wife and I just ate here, we both had the veggie burger and fries. The Veggie Burger is come with what ever you want to put in it, that's what we were told. The burger was a bit small for me but it was really good. The fries, now these fries were really good.

The service was OK, they still seem very new to everything. The place is set up like a 1950 restaurant but its cool. The front counter is all pennies and a glass cover on top, really cool. They have several tables but sit 2 people. That I saw was one booth that could hold 5 people I think and then the outside table could hold about 6 people.

This place is the classic old school neighborhood diner.....that seems to have disappeared and been replaced with Carl's Jr's. Leighton the co-owner will make you feel like you are eating at home, and the staff is super cool and friendly. Its a burger and fries joint, with a twist, and thats what makes it great. Instead of being a faceless drone at Jack in the Box, grab a seat at this place, have a slice of delicious Dutch Apple Pie and get to know the person sitting next to you. Old school style.

After months and months of delays, city zoning hassles, and so many petition signatures, the Commonwealth Cafe is now OPEN! at 11:45pm on a sat night it was packed to the gills with hungry people. Go patron this excellent late night eatery and then review it on yelp!

Update: I ate a late lunch at 3ish on a sunday to finally try out the food. The place has a great vibe inside. The green I think works for it, and though the place was empty except for employees, the cooks were cooking up a storm. It turns out that people at the Bluefoot next door can call in their order, or just come over and order it to go. The staff of the Commonwealth Cafe just walk it over when it is ready. Everyone was very nice and personable. Lots of hand shaking and "My name is ..." from them. One girl's first day was today. It definitely feels like they are figuring out everything and how much to order / keep in stock (they were out of lettuce and vegan chili when I visited). But they definitely have the will, and where there's a will ... I did like the pennies under the plexiglass table tops. There are about 4 two-person diner tables, and one big booth that could probably hold a good 6-7 drunkards at the end of the night as they wait for their food. Outside are two long wooden tables. The menu is simple, and yet I had to study it for a good 10 minutes before ordering. I got the Veggie Burger ($6.50) and the Mac-N-Cheese ($5). Every item on the menu is 'a-la-cart' so you get what you order. I thought $6.50 was a little much for a veggie burger, but it was made very well and tasted great. The size was smaller than I expected though. The mac and cheese was very cheesy. Their Limeaide was delcious as well! Overall, I'm very glad there is (FINALLY) an americana quick service late night food option besides the Saguro's. I hope they get their zoning problems settled, but for the time being they will do great with the 12-12 time span. The drunks at bluefoot will just have to learn to come over and get food before 12. This shouldn't be a problem as Bluefoot is also closing at midnight Sunday-Thursday now. Support your local businesses, and give this little diner a try!

Opening Update

The electrical upgrade for the building is nearly complete and hopefully will be done by the end of this week. Once that's finished we can get the final building inspection and then call for our final health inspection. After we're signed off by the Health Department we'll take 2 or 3 days to cook our menu and set our service standards. I would love to think that we could be open by the Labor Day weekend. Some things take time and can't be rushed. Suffice it to say that we will be open as fast as humanly possible.

At long last the electrical upgrade for our building is underway.
Once the plans for the work have been made they must be submitted
to the city for approval and payment of fees. The actual work can't
begin until we get signed off by the city. The job should take a full
day to complete After the upgrade is complete we have to call for final
electrical, final building and final health inspections so that we can
open for business. Before we open we'll cook our menu and go through
our service steps to make sure we're up to standards.

Thanks for waiting for us....we'll see you soon.

About two weeks ago we received a letter from neighborhood code compliance office of the city of San Diego informing us that a complaint had been filed regarding our hours of operation. We learned our location falls in a CN-1-2 commercial node zoning area. This zoning designation prohibits doing business after midnight.

The concept and business model for The Commonwealth Cafe has always been that of a late night diner. Our plans were approved by the city of San Diego and the Health Department and our hours of operation were never questioned. We simply seek to provide a service to our community and the neighborhood. A few facts to consider about the issue.
Jack in the Box open till 2am
    Sagauro's open 24 hours
Both are bordered on two sides of the residences.
30th Street is primarily a commercial corridor.
We are bordered on 4 sides by commercial lot's.
    We are not selling alcohol.
We are contributing to the gentrification of the neighborhood.
There is a demand for a late night eatery in this area that that is not being met.
There is plenty of parking along 30th, especially later in the evening.

The anticipation patronage by local law enforcement will mollify any concerns about noise or disturbances.

If you would like to support our right to do business without
restrictions on our hours of operation or comment on our proposed
interim hours of noon to midnight please check our comment section.
